In 1951 she studied at the Bezalel Acadmy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. In 1961, after studying at the Avni Art Institute, she moved to Paris. When she returned to Israel in 1965, she developed an abstract painting style employing strong colors, geometric shapes and minimalism. During this period, she joined the Ten Plus group. In the 1970s, silk screen printing became her major artistic medium. She also taught silk screen printing and established a silk screen workshop at the Zaritsky Artists House in Tel Aviv-Yafo. In her final years, she returned to painting, creating large canvases in shades of black. Alima is the professional name of Alima Rita (1932 - 2013), painter, print expert and teacher of Israeli art.Alima was born in the Rita family in 1932 in Nesher, near Haifa, and at the age of five moved with her family to Kiryat Haim. In 1951 she applied for art studies at the Bezalel School in Jerusalem. After one year of studies, she left school and enlisted in military service. At the end of her service she joined the students of the Midrasha for teachers in Tel Aviv, founded by the artist Aharon Avni and the educator Eliyahu Beilis. After completing her studies, she became an active artist and exhibited extensively Israel. She also applied for art instruction. Her works are characterized by paintings and prints of abstract landscape, inspired by the scenes of her childhood in the agricultural fields surrounding Kiryat Haim where she grew up. With the controversy arose over the debate of the Greater Land of Israel, which corresponds to the ideology of the political right in Israel, she added to the landscape paintings - a framework, and thus hinted to her opinion about setting a border to the Israeli landscape. Alima is the recipient of the Prize for Encouragement of Creative Art by the Ministry of Science, Culture and Sport for 2007, winner of the Culture and Sport Minister Prize for 2010 and recipient of the Nata Dushnitsky-Kaplan Foundation Prize for Art from the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. In 2009, a comprehensive exhibition of her works was held at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art under the supervision of Yaniv Shapira and accompanied by a comprehensive catalog. In 2012 Shapira returned and curated another exhibition of Alima at the Kibbutz Gallery, where new works were exhibited alongside works by other artists from the Alima’s private collection. Alima Rita died in 2013. Named after her Alima Rita prize for the art of print.
